cornice running

hiya there new to the forum, just wondererd if anyone had any tips on cornice running?

That is a very specialised skill Spred. Have a look a some of the websites. There is also one or two helpful vids on Youtube. I've repaired the odd length of cornice, using the profile of the original, but i've never run a complete cornice from scratch,,,, love to learn though.

cheers roughcaster, iv done cornice runing before but its been a while and yer your right it is a specialised skill very time consuming, the way i did it was from scratch with battons on wall and building up layers and running mould thru, but i know alot od people run whole lenghs thru in work shop.

I remember watching Tommy Walsh a year or two back,, he spent a day with a company running cornices on a bench. There is a video on Youtube, where a young woman is running a cornice in situ using a mould. Great to watch,,, a very skilled and rewarding job.

If running in situ, would you use the same kind of white plaster that they use when running it on a bench, there are two firms near me that do it, i have only seen one of their work, but it is very good and impressive to watch although i dont know what plaster he was using.

Epic thread recovery but we have a load of run-in plaster in one room that I really like, needs some repair but not a lot at all. IN the other main room we need new cornice and of the three people I have contacted they all cast lengths and stick them up rather than running it it. Even if I wanted the same copying, they would take a mould and then cast it.

I would love to have it run-in to be 'right' but if even the specialists just cast it is how it is. The one lath+lime ceiling has been repaired with bonding and gypsom and the other bad enough to be overboarded and skimmed so its not a heritage restoration.
