Hi,
I have just removed a sink that we don't use in a utility room, but still need to drain the washing machine into the waste pipe. Hoping that someone could confirm if I have the correct configuration.

Firstly, I am presuming that I would need to have a u-bend?

Secondly, with the sink gone, am I correct in saying that would need to leave the pipe open at the top so that it can vent, with the washing machine drain placed loose into the top of the standpipe as per the diagram below?

Sorry if this is basic, but I have always fitted washing machines to an under sink setup in the past, and it just struck me as I was taking this apart that I would probably need to retain a u-bend and a vent.

Yup and just use the cold former bend that comes with the washing machine to hold the drain hose correctly and use a tie wrap to hold it in place
