Correct Way to Slate a Roof in Scotland ?

Hi

I note that some roofs in Scotland have the slates nailed direct to sarking boards and other have horizontal battens fitted with the slates fitted to these.

Is there a correct way ? Are battens used when sterling board is used to sheet the roof ?

My question relates to timber framed houses ?

the correct way is slate directly onto sarking board.What type of slate you going to be using

the sarking board will allow the roof to breath as there layed with a small gap also the sarking board expands and contracts that's also why you want a small gap between the boards

There is a housing development being built next to me and I noticed that the slates are being fixed onto battens.

I just wondered why they had not fitted sarking boards ?

alot of new builds tend to use felt over the rafters.But for actual scotch slate where there random lengths and random widths using battens to lay them on would be lets say one heck of a pain of the arse.With the likes of a Welsh slate or a Spanish slate it easy to set out your batten gauges to be all the same this aint practical with a Scottish dimishing course roof so they near always tend to be on sarking.
