Corrugated Asbestos Roof

I know this subject has come up a number of times, but there's a slightly different slant to this.

I'm buying a house with an asbestos cement roof on the garage and shed. I had planned careful removal and disposal of this myself. However, 2 surveyors have commented that the cement is starting to break down, and therefore present a risk.

I'm now a bit more cautious about doing this myself. Should I get a specialist in, or will it be safe enough if I wear disposable coverall/mask etc, and not cut it?

Well the obvious answer most will say is to get it done by a specialist.

If you really want to do it yourself, do it in the pouring rain.

Thanks for advice. Have spoken to the surveyor and he reckons best get the specialists in, because they will clean the area of dust afterward. Had a quote of £650+VAT, which is pretty good considering the council charge £20 per sheet and I'd have to get it there somehow.

I'm in the same boat as you, and wanted to get an rough idea of the costs. How big is the roof of your garage? My roof is about 2m x8m. Which area are you in if you dont mind me asking, as i feel london prices maybe more expensive than other parts of the UK?

I've no idea how big the garage is

All I can say is that it's pretty much a standard single garage, would just about take my car which is a mazda 6, so prob 3x5 ish. There's also a very small shed.

I'm based in South Wales, I've no idea if the company would travel outside of the area, but I can give you the details if you like?

Surveyor thought it more likely to cost £1000, so pretty happy with the price. If it wasn't degraded to such a point, I'd have done it myself, but the surveyor reckoned it wasn't worth the risk now.

Have you tried talking to a skip company? See if they can offer you a large skip, knowing that it will be taking away asbstos sheets. This way, you may be able to unscrew the sheets, and put them straight in the skip without breaking them, or damaging them. Wear a face mask and goggles, and gloves and coverals (and boot covers). Do it on a windless day. Also, buy a new hoover (can be cheap) that you can use to hoover up dust as soon as its created, and put in the skip at the end of the job.

Apparently common household hoovers just re-distribute the dust by sucking it up and pushing it out.

Surveyor reckoned best bet was specialist, I'm not going to argue with him, because I've known him for a long time and trust him completely!

£763.75 I could come and do it and have a weekend break in Wales @ that price...........I`d cover it with a cheap bitumenous paint ..........have the break for the paint to dry . then unbolt the sheets and bag them whole ........carry them back to Sussex and take to tip .....as long as the Gestapo don`t stop me on the M4 with no waste carrier`s licence

I think this might be the pertinant part

Firm is licensed in the removal and disposal and will give me all the relevant paperwork. It would cost me a few hundred quid to dispose of myself, as there is only one civic amenity site in the area that will take whole sheets, and they charge £20 per sheet!

I'd always believed that all LA's took it for free. My local council, Sutton will accept asbestos, you have to write to them first and they give you a date to bring it in. My friend down the road comes under Croydon council and was told it would cost about £200 to bring in her tiny asbestos shed.

Is there a general rule, or do some councils like to encourage fly tipping. (not that I would advocate such a thing)

Well my local council website says they'll take asbestos in small amounts at any civic amenity site. I'd always imagined small amounts to be perhaps a sheet or two at a time, but apparently a small amount would be a single bin bag. So it would seem its ok for me to break it up and make it more dangerous - as long as it fits in a bag

Nige F I've got a waste carriers licence and am in S.Wales (I drop trailer off, you paint it, have break, put on trailer, I pick up trailer and dump it)
