Have just got a 1996 corsa 1.4 but the engine and engine bay is a evil looking mess. Ok spose after 10yrs of muck and grime i would look like it as well. Any ideas on a good clean up method, was thinking of gunking down for starters. Must say not that oily considering age just seems a mess when first look at it.

A blow over with a steam cleaner will be fine as long as your carefull.. just leave the engine running, and be carefull where you blast, dont get too carried away around the air intake and electrics.

The thought did cross my mind Hitachimad, might look at how much to hire a cleaner or see if can get it done locally. Mind you did think of giving some of it a blast with power washer but common sense kicked in and decided differently. Was wondering if any of these engine cleaners like gunk etc were any good, long time since i used any of them and wasn't that impressed all those years back but always ready to have another go.

Gunk is good but you need to get down and dirty with it, it's just a degreaser really so there are others on the market you could try. Ordinary paraffin is also good for really thick glupe. Get some carb cleaner for the delicate bits. If you have access to an ordinary hose with a bit of pressure on it that helps after you slap on the Gunk but I wouldn't advise running the engine while spraying water around. There's far more chance that you'll get it in the air intake or on the fan if it starts running while you're there.
The rocker gasket was always a weak point on Vauxhall's but it's pretty straightforward to change.
