I know prices vary around the country, alternatively what is the rough time to shut off water to header tank, clean out tank, drain to first floor level, remove existing leaking valves and replace, flush out radiator, refill and bleed and check system operation. My estimates are usually wrong, so I'd appreciate some thoughts.

Well I drained my system last weekend to enable me to remove a radiator (no lock valve here :( )

Took about an houris to drain (small header, 7 radiators and boiler)
It then took about 1.5 hours to put a lock valve on, ree fill the system and deal with the leaks with the new lock valve in the kitchen. Had to drain the system another 2 times to get it right. My wife was very helpful so it would have taken a little longer if I had been on my own.

I need to drain the system again when I refit the radiator as I'm sure I saw some sludge leaving the header tank :( . Can you suggest a suitable cleaner and the process?

Treat the header tank as a seperate exercise. Get up there with a hose long enough to go down to the bathroom (make sure the outlet end doesen't escape from the bath) and get it siphoning the water from the tank. Let more water flow in, and stir up all the crud (better block the outlet first, or you'll get crud in the pipes).

You need to suck all the crud out so the water is clean and clear, then you can go to the rest of the system. Use a system cleaner. I use Kamco Hyperflush. Run it round for a couple of weeks and then drain and refill, adding inhibitor.

Now the weekend's over (still football though I suppose), has anyone got ideas about the cost?

I would charge from £50 to £70 depending what the system looked like new old or one big problem waiting for me to touch it.
