Hi guys, any idea how much a tiler would charge per square metre?

I'm trying to work out whether to tile the bathroom myself and possibly screw it up, or get an "expert" in. Also, I've had a bloke in my house twice now who's done a cracking job with plastering, do plasterers sometimes do tiling as well, or is it best to get a specialist in?

The best thing would be to ask, your plasterer may be just a plasterer or be good with tiles, as for doing it yourself why not try tileing somwhere where it wont notice, I am being serious say if you have an "out house" or similar.

As for price it depends on where you are in the country, we can only give you guestimations, why not get several quotes (try asking on the phone) then ask can you visit previous work.

I actually tiled the kitchen myself and found that relatively easy, and most people were quite impressed considering it was my first effort. My biggest concern with my bathroom is that the person who tiled it before made a pigs ear of it eg tiles were at funny angles, uneven spaces. This means that I can't really tile over the top because they ain't flat! Hence I intend to pull them off and get someone in to do it properly, because the wall isn't very flat and the ceiling tapers away (its a very old house).

I'm also looking at plastic cladding, any idea if thats any good?

as i understand it the best way to get flat tiles is to start with a flat surface, perhaps you could remove the existing tiles and get your plasterer mate in to replaster the wall so it is perfectly flat and level for you.

As for the "plasitc sheets" i have no experiance of them, but there is a mention (that i can not yet find) of them on this forum, but the author did say it was less hassle and they looked good.

If you use plastic cladding you will have to fix it on batten onto the wall which could give you problem behind toilet cistern, sink & bath or if you don't want to tackle the job, a good tiler can flatten out the tile that sticking out and make goods then tiles over the top of it,then you have to watch out for behind toilet cistern, sink & bath for extra tile thickness. As its an old house might pay you to have it replaster as previous note.

£15 per sq yard i paid a few weeks back with excellent results...not that I couldn't do it myself but if you have other thing on the go the professional does the job so much quicker!
