Hello,

First time poster but this forum has helped me no end in the past.

We've just moved into a new house and we've got this monstrosity hanging out of the side of our fireplace and want to remove it. It is next to the gas supply but I don't think the two are connected.

It has a drain on it so I think it may have something to do with the old central heating system.

Any help would be excellent.

Thanks

It is a heating pipe and is/was connected to a back boiler.

It may still be filled with water and opening the drain cock will determine that.

You don't say if the back boiler is still being used. That is most unlikely because the gas supply pipe is only sized for a gas fire.

hi thank you for your reply.

ive just opened the drain cock and nothing has come out of it.

Second question now,

how is best to remove it?

You need to slowly UNSCREW the drain cock to be sure! The washer inside usually sticks after a few years!

Then use an angle grinder to cut it off and the grind the pipe back to just below the surface so that you can use filler.

I would make sure the valve above the drain cock is open then try the drain point again, if still empty just disconnect everything and snap the copper pipe off at floor level, either that or you will have to go under the floor to cut and cap it

Rather than opening the valve which may be jammed it will be easier to remove the brass male cap at the top.
