Silly question, could I have fixed this better? Think the bits that are supposed to be on it are broken.

Just needs a couple of the correct bolts and it could be fitted correctly, check your local tip , gates get thrown out every week.

The bolts are used to expand the frame getting a tight fit.

More likely to kill a child like that.

 
The bottom bolts should expand further if you put a pair of pliers on the nuts, and if you can find the make of the gate, you might be able to get spares for the upper bolts.

Make is on it, mothercare, majority of bolts are the same.
 
You would have been better putting both bolts on one side and wood (not wedges) on the other.
 
Brilliant suggestion Ian; that's what I call lateral thinking. But he wouldn't actually need the wood on the other side, he could just tighten the bolts, and push the gate up against the other side.

Except the bolts are not long enough and required both sides to adjust the vertical.
