Looking for new paint, I was thinking of buying this dulux paint as we need something more tough and washable.

The only issue is, would we be able to use that paint over this vinyl Matt that we already have? All of our walls are currently painted with vinyl matt

Yes , two coats would be needed but yes

Are you definitely buying this dulux one ? There are other tough mates out there that will be as good and probably cheaper....unless the dulux you show is on offer near by ?

Obviously Dulux often do a good range of colours but Crown , Johnstones , Leyland all do similar paints to the one you might be buying

My feeling is that very few flat , subtle matt paints which also describe themselves as TOUGH, WASHABLE, WIPEABLE ....actually are

I find a paint in between a matt and a silk finish ......a soft sheen .....usually a 4 on the johnstones scale on the side of the tin ....usually means it's fairly good at being gently wiped in case of a spillage , sticky fingers etc

But the further you move to a dull matt it's not ......and the more silk or shiny it is it's too bright and mirror like

I personally don't think the paint industry has managed to produce a low sheen , dull matt that covers the wall well but can be wiped clean or washed

Sadly a matt ....whatever they say .....tends to be fragile to dirt , liquid, moisture and stains

That's my experience

Thank you for this in-depth response.

If I were to buy a soft sheen or a satin paint instead, would I still be able to paint over the vinyl matt?

Yes definitely.....but 2 coats for good coverage

If there is a big colour difference it might need 3 but 2 should be ok

It could be you could get a very good wipeable flat matt with no shine ..and that dulux one u linked could be perfect...but i havnt used one

Johnstones do wipeable matt paints ......often on sale cheap at BandM ?

Some of these are 3 out of 10 .....so very low shine ......but in my experience can be wiped if someone drops a cup of tea on the floor and it kicks up onto the walls !

I find this is a nice paint for general work where people want a soft sheen.....that being said even a soft , subtle sheen is too much for some people these days....that's fine ...its personal taste

At the price it is you could buy a small tin and try it on a wall then use it as a base coat if it isn't your thing

Paints by the main manufacturers these days are all fairly similar and a matt will generally cover a softsheen and vice versa ....with an extra coat being the worst case scenario
