Could I use this to prevent backflow in a rubber hose?

Hi,

I have a water softener that recently backflowed from the dishwasher and into the salt chamber via the rubber overflow hose which plumbs into the kitchen waste pipe. I don't want to replace the waste connections as it's very tight under the sink and the easier option would be for me to fit a check valve and I reckon something like this could do the job? I appreciate its designed for fuel lines but in my opinion it feels like it will be more reliable and robust?

Thank you in advance for your help.

1. All plumbing non-return valves, except the flap type which must be oriented the correct way, are spring loaded, and require a sufficient pressure of water to open the spring. The pressure behind a water softener overflow pipe is very low, and I suspect would not be enough to open the valve, thus leaving the softener with no overflow.
2. I would strongly advise you to use an air gap for either the softener or for the the dishwasher.
3. The overflow from softeners is usually around 12 to 14 mm internal diameter. The Halfords valve you link to is only 10mm, and I assume this is the internal diameter. So you would also lose flow through a restricted passage. Probably not a huge worry, as the spigot to which the overflow hose attaches may be small bore anyway. Depends on what softener you have.
