Could someone just recap the basics?

I have built an retaining garden wall using breeze blocks. I want to render it to improve its appearance. I have read the other posts but have ended up feeling confused.
Would someone be able to give an brief, simple 'idiots guide' to rendering?
Can I avoid using lime? Whats the difference between a plasticiser and a waterproofer- do I really need both? Do I really need a scratchcoat?- can't I just go direct on the wall with one layer?
I would really aprreciate some kind soul helping me out here. Thanks
