why do court buildings always have that brick slope on the base of the outside walls? :?: :?: Is it some sort of security feature?

It's so when the criminals try to escape from a window they hit the slope and slide down and don't hurt themselves as much,

PS haven't got a clue,

you have far to much time on your hands ,is that why you were in court today , devil making work for them etc ..lol :)

In the sixteenth century, when women were being tried as witches, it was thought that during the trial it was possible for an evil spirit to depart the body of the accused, exit through a window and find some other soul to possess. The idea was that if a fence made from hazel branches was built around the courthouse, the spirit could not cross this barrier and would eventually die. Courthouses eventually came to be built with small surrounding walls, and later sloping lower walls to symbolise the hazel fence.

Maybe thats why. mlb3c, im not sure if you're familiar with the court buildings here, all the ones i have seen are brick-built and the first 4-8 feet above ground is a brick slope, at about 45 degrees. Thus, you have to go up a flight of steps at the front of the court building, to get inside. Most of the court buildings in this country seem to be 70's-90's buildings, yet nobody knows why they are built like this!!!!

And for the record, the above was a joke . . . i have never set foot inside a court! (unlike a certain lass i like whos just been given 120 hours community service for battering a guy in Doncaster town centre 3 years ago!)

Civil courts or criminal courts?

If the latter, notwithstanding the fact that I don't think they're all like that, surely it's something to do with the holding cells in the basement?
