covering concrete hearth

I am sanding the floorboards in my house and when removing the carpet in one room I have discovered an old concrete hearth which I wish to leave as a feature but it is rippled and dis-coloured
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can smooth it off and paint it?
Someone mentioned a latex screed but I have never heard of that before.

Go to a Builder's Merchants or B&Q , Wickes , Homebase etc , and ask for Self Levelling Compound . It does exactly what it says on the bag .

Hi Blue,
Latex screed is an underlay and isn't supposed to take foot traffic. If you don't expect to walk over the hearth much you might get away with it. Mix it to a creamy consistency and pour it in, it will require a bit of trowelling. Once poured in if you take a plant atomiser spray and give the surface of the screed a light spray it will help take out the trowel marks and eliminate bubbles forming on the surface...then paint it.
For best results dig out the hearth, latex screed and cover with new stone tiles.
