Cracked fireplace lintel???

Hi There - First post so please be gentle.

I plan to block off my fire place and fit a wall mounted electric fire. I've removed the tiles from the surround and in doing discovered loose plaster so I've taken that as well to make sure everything is sound.

However, in doing so, I found the fireplace lintel is badly cracked. As I'm blocking this off, I'm think best thing is to remove it and go get a concrete lintel from wicked to support the breast - would that be sufficient? Is there anything else I would need to do.

If you are able to get a concrete lintel in with a good 100mm seating each side, go for it, it will certainly take the weight...pinenot :)
 
That is the throat lintel and is not structural. The structural throat block can be seen above it, and above that will normally be an arch

Yeah - the badly cracked one is the throat lintel but the one above that in the top pic has a small crack in to - I've tried to zoom in on that.
