Hi all,
I am currently in the middle of stripping off pine cladding in the utility room because it looks really outdated and I have come across a few issues with the existing plaster underneath. First off, there are quite a lot of cracks in the wall as it looks like it has been cement rendered, followed by a finishing layer of skim. The second issue is that whoever painted this wall originally, didn’t mist coat it by the looks of it as I have already scraped off quite a lot of paint as I plan to put up some shelving eventually and need a reasonable fixing.
The problem I've got is that I don't want to start hacking off all the plaster for the sake of it, as I think by putting some bonding in the cracks and then covering over with some jointing tape will do the job? All I can say is that these don't appear to be cracks in the brickwork as that appears to be all fine, my theory anyways is that there has been a bit of movement over the years followed by some areas which have lost a bit of bond to the brickwork underneath.
Would I be better off to strip all the paint off the walls first, then fill the cracks with bonding and put some scrim tape over the filled areas, followed by reskimming? As I really want to keep the costs and agrow down to a minimum if at all possible. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
