Our 9.5 year old Barrett house has had creaky floorboards since we bought it new. We called in the Nat. Housebuilder Insurers but they just said they needed to be screwed down and it probably wouldn't work anyway! We have put in hundreds of screws along most of the joists but they still creak like hell! Would renewing all the upstairs boards work when we have an adjoining extention built?

You will find all of your floorboards are not built around the walls & room layout, hense making it impossible to replace the floorboards.

Our 1996 Barrett house (and our neighbours) has also had the most awful creaking noise upstairs, only in two rooms. After years of putting up with it I also lifted the carpets and screwed hundreds of screws into the boards and glued inbetween all the boards BUT it still creaks  It fixed a little bit but I have determined that the creaking is not from the floorboards at all.

The plasterboard wall between bedroom 1 & 3 has nails which hold this to the boards, it it these nails that causes the creaking that sends shivers down our spine. I have been meaning to remove the skirting on one side and attempt to remove/cut these nails.

it could be the joists where they sit on a supporting wall.
ive done a couple of these and the joists needed packing.

My 4 month old Wimpey house has had creaking floorboards since we moved in. I must have heard all the stories of settlement, movement, 'bouncing floor ' design and more from the site manager (aka Coco the clown)

Years ago I have worked on some of these site and to save time the foreman used to make us leave out the herringbone in between the floor joists which does stop the noise problem.
