Creating storage space under the bath

I'm thinking of making use of the space under my bath for storage. It would be particularly useful as a place to store trainers, which I think would dry out OK in there because it's just floorboards underneath and there is some reasonable air circulation from below. My flat is not that big, and I do lack somewhere to leave dirty shoes.

I have a bath panel which I haven't yet fitted and am thinking that I could cut an 18 inch width off the end of this and using some hinges make a small door. Alternatively perhaps I could buy an end panel and use that, so that the edges are clean. There's a gap of about 3cm between the end of the bath and the wall.

Do you think this is a viable idea, or is it going to be really hard to make it look any good?
