Hi All,

In the midst of an extension project and the electrician has stated that the current CU (photos attached) cannot be used. 3 options on the table, in order of increasing complexity / cost...
  1. New, separate dedicated CU located in a cupboard in the vicinity of the extension
  2. Upgrade the current CU and leave it in situ
  3. Remove old CU and relocate a new one in the vicinity of the extension e.g. under the stairs
FWIW the current CU is located at ceiling height in a cupboard.

We'd also look to add an EV charger connection to the house at some point in the future.

Would you agree with the electrician's assessment and which option would you feel is preferred? We'd prefer to keep a consolidated CU so shying away from option 1.

Many thanks!

I would think it that 'Option 3' is by far the most sensible, although it would be for you to decide (in conjunction with the electrician's input regarding 'practicalities') where you wanted the new CU to be located.

Kind Regards, John

Option 2 or 3. There is no RCD protection by the looks of things and the CU looks plastic. Many circuits look like they'd need re-routing though for option 3

Thanks All. For option 3 it'd be about 6 metres of channeling through the ceilings of 2 rooms to get under the stairs, hopefully bearable as both rooms ultimately getting redone.

For option 2 I'd be a little concerned about cupboard space in order to fit the new CU. The electricity meter could be shifted a little to the right I suspect, but I have no idea what this Venner time switch is on the left and whether it is fine to remove? Cheers.
