I've just had an outbuilding built and am about to wire it. I'll be using a garage consumer unit (something like this)

I've seen this and wondered whether there is something a bit bigger which could be wired into the feed between the house consumer unit and outbuilding consumer unit, so electricity usage could be monitored. More of a novelty purpose really.

Thoughts????

I suppose someone should ask the usual questions about what type pf supply you have (TT/TN-S/TN-C-S), where the supply to the garage CU is taken from, what type & size of cable, how long it is, how it will get to the outbuilding etc.

If you don't mind spending a grand or so for novelty purposes, your supplier will lay in a separate supply for you, and throw in a meter free of charge.

Then every quarter they will send you a piece of paper telling you how much you have used.

Hager actually make an ammeter that fits in the consumer unit, though I can't find anywhere selling it.

They also make a killowatt-hour meter:
