I'm installinga new fireplace and the new hearth will be bigger than the original hearth. This means I will have to cut a section of the wooden floor so that the base of the hearth can sit on the concrete base of the original floor.

Short of lifting the floor and possibly damaging boards does anyone know of any way these boards can be cut as they lie at the minute?

Plunge circular saw could do the trick

oooooohhhhhh ouch

may be safer to use somthing like an angle grinder with sutable disk so when you hit the concrete your dont ruin the blade

you can also use a variable speed jigsaw on its nose
a reciprecal saw with a floor board blade and batton to run against

you could also use a handsaw and batton
but only use tools you are fammiliar with

Our plunge saw can be set to specific depth to avoid ruining the blade. But like you say: only use tools you're familiar with
