Cutting roof joists

Hi,
I'm planning on boarding my loft, in a few place's the wiring from the lights go over the joist's, what's the best way to cut a notch in the joist with out damaging the plaster on the ceiling below?

You're probably better off asking this in the Electrical section (or searching for it there, as it's been asked a few times)

edit: sorry - didn't entirely read your post properly! When asked in the electrical section, they tend not to be fans of notching the joists (drilling and feeding through is the preferred approach).

To your question, assuming you still want to do this then a jigsaw won't affect the plaster.

You wouldn't cut it - you would isolate the circuit, test that it's dead, disconnect (unscrew) from the next fitting, feed thru the holes, then reconnect to the original fitting.

***BUT*** if you're not comfortable doing that the definitely do not attempt it.
 
Daniel - the following is a very old thread (2004) but it neatly describes the options (and regulations!) for drilling and notching joists.

I had a very quick scan through later posts and the regs seem to remain consistent, but this particular thread was easier to read.

You'll note that there are clear requirements on where notches are allowed to go.
