Just send him the bill for the running cost of the jet fighter and enforce a sale of any of his assets to redeem it. Then get him to write individual letters of apology to all individuals concerned.

Simultaneous posting. Think one purpose of the fighter is to ensure that the passenger plane cannot be used as a missile as in 9/11 and is a clear message to any hijacker that this will be the case.

The plane was escorted over less densely populated areas well off the flight path. The escort is to ensure
1) The pilot follows the new flight path
2) Less casualties on the ground should it explode
3) To shoot it down if it deviates from the new flight path.

Again very very quick to judge.... for all we know this guy may be having a breakdown, have tourettes or unstable... if it is because of one of these reasons it canno be helped but if he thinks he is a practical joker or drunk he should be jailed ,paasport revoked and pay all due costs... wait until the reason comes out before you call him a dickhead

The problem then would be that if he had assets and had to sell / redeem them, he would be no doubt pennyless. Then the tax payer would have to support him and his family.
And if he get's a couple of years in prison, we're still supporting the b'stard, to the tune of over £37,000 per year (based on 2010/2011 information) So with inflation, I reckon it will be nearer £40,000, if not more. Yep make him pay I say.
(and if he has family, then no doubt we'll be supporting them whilst he's inside)
We live only a couple of miles from Manchester Airport. I remember hearing a very loud rumbling sound this dinner time and assumed that it must be a heavy lorry speeding down the road outside our house (as they do).
Then it came on the news. I wish I'd known. I'd have loved to have gone outside for a close up view of a Typhoon! This sort of thing restores a certain amount of pride in my country. Our (seriously depleted and underfunded) armed services are still able to perform as well as, and probably better than, any others in the world. Just about the only thing this country still does well.
Yes, what a prat. I hear all the voices (above) about the most appropriate punishment and admit that there are always pros and cons. Whatever punishment is decided (and my guess is that one of our lenient judges will award him a 'suspended caution', or whatever they do these days), my suggestion would be to ban him for life from entering any airport in this country, either outbound or inbound. I have a feeling that most airlines won't want him anyway; possibly ferry companies and the eurotunnel too. See how he likes that.

IIRC Cheshire is in the North West. Have you not yet figured out you cannot educate them and get yourself back on the right side of the pennines?
