The back door was unusable for several days recently, jammed locked, so like it or lump it, it was in and out, via the front. Normally we let her out via the front door, then release the side/back door so she can just push it to open it to get back in - except when it's too hard to push open, and she has learned to bark to let us know she wants in.

2am this morning, she woke me up, being quite vocal, moaning and groaning, sighing, so I asked her if the wanted to go out. She indicated she did, so I let downstairs, and out the front door, leaving the door open for her to get back in, and light on. She wouldn't come in the front, instead she sat at the back door barking, at 2am.

Avril does sounds like hard work...

Cats are just as bad, we have three, two will go in/out through the cat flap, the third will not push the flap open, she will use the hole if I clamp the flap open, but will not push it open, instead jumps onto the veranda, and taps the window with her paws. She will also come in and go straight to the litter tray.

Had a cat who could open windows with a persistant paw and hung from door handles to open them when he wanted to get where he wanted to go.

But i hear you had a spot of back trouble recently @Harry Bloomfield and maybe y'all be interested to hear Millions of people worldwide with severe back pain may be able to get relief from a new drug that uses antibiotics rather than painkillers to tackle the condition. @ the Guardian

Perhaps your dog picks up on the pain when you're having that kind of trouble?

We had a dog which taught herself to do that.

Thanks, I usually just take it easy, when I feel it coming on.

She was obviously concerned, at the time.

I mean, some say dogs can sense pain, smell it in their owners chemical imbalance and i wonder if your dog acts up when you have these problems.

Daft owner more like! Has trained the dog to do something in a certain way then suddenly wants to change the trick! Bet the neighbours loved being woke up at 2am to the sound of your dog barking..

It was originally the idea to solve a problem....

She would ask to go out, you open the door to let her out, she sees it's cold out, or raining, and she would change her mind. Now she asks to go out, and knows she can only get back in, by walking around the other door, as she is out there, she might as well have a pee. It works, just fine - normally.
