During the recent snow here in the UK I took a look in the loft to check for snow being blown in. I've been planning a re roof for a while which is due to start in a few weeks. Whilst looking around I noticed the a hip rafter is split about 3 food from the top. Its a fairly significant crack that runs about 40cm in length in parts and most of the width (horizontal) . the split is about 5mm at its widest. The roofer I've gone with is planning to use a 700 mm steel sleeve to strengthen it but no strut support.
Does this sound feaseable to anyone and has anyone done any thing similar? The cracks appear old and its a 1938 build. Cheers guys.

The thumping great knot is the giveaway!

I guess a re roof would mean its possible to replace it.

Done correctly I imagine 2 steel plates would be just as strong.

A 600mm 1.5mm steel splice plate or a 12mm strip of ply nailed will do. It's not really a problem as hips carry very little load.

So the hip that has a crack due to a big knot........ has been ok for 80 years :).

I think its gonna be ok!

I don't know how long the crack has been there. But its not new. That's s all I know.

It probably would be ok with a few bits of metal or ply.. also as the roof is coming off a couple of hours work and a couple of hundred quid.. you get a nice sound hip and nothing for a future surveyor to highlight.

The roofer plans to bolt a 700mm c section of steel to it but I am a little concerned that it won't stop the crack spreading. I guess a wood glue / epoxy resin would be best for that.?

Really it's any easy job.
Looks like you have clay double roman tiles which strip easily.
So soon as they are off replace the hip. There is only one scrnario that could make it tricky and it doesn't apply here.

Hmmm, why do I get the notion that you are actually serious? :cautious:

I am.
I treat all jobs as my own house. I wouldn't bandage this up if my roof covering was off...

Cheers for the input.
Ive decided to go with another roofer. He will replace the hip rafter for me.
