Any help appreciated.....

I have a double fronted end terraced. It was rendered probably 20+ years ago. The render has quite a lot of hairline cracks in it - its been up many years. We are having terrible trouble with damp in front and rear internal walls and struggling to keep it clean and mould free. There is a damp course in but the moisture in the walls and the mould is from floor level up to 4 or 5 feet in places! Is this likely to be down to the cracks in render allowing moisture in? We couldnt afford to re-render or recover the house so Im looking for more simple solutions. Ive noticed that there is an air vent brick in the front wall but this seems to have been plastered over internally. Ive read a lot about keeping water out (seal everything) Vs let the moisture in but allow rooms to vent. Which is best and any tips that might help?
