Damp proof

I have built a few brick walls around the garden as retaining walls/ glorified plant pots etc! But now I'm building a porch and obviously I need to use damp course.

Do I put mortar either side of the damp course or do I just lay the DP on top of the relevant row of bricks and put mortar on top of this and continue with my bricks.

It looks like my neighbours conservatory has the DP directly on top of the bricks but what I'm wondering is what holds the bricks in place if you do it this way!?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

You can just put it straight on top of the brick with no mortar bed although if there are any high pionts or unevens the weight of the brickwork ontop could rupture the membrane and cause it to fail.

It's best to sandwhich the dpc between two thin beds of mortar so the weight is distributed across the membrane evenly.
