Dark Walnut Shelving

I'd like some custom shape/fit dark walnut (look) shelves. They dont have to be the real thing - as long as they look like the real deal. They'll probably have to be 18mm thick or so.

They'll be going into alcoves and may also need a bit of a curve on them for asthetics.

What are my options? Buy cheap similar wood and stain it? If so which wood and what type of stain?
The real thing? How much and where?

Could get normal pine furniture board and stain it, or get walnut veneer mdf, the real thing (albeit 1mm thick on an 18mm mdf board)

Pricey though, about £60-£80 per 8x4 sheet, stained pineboard will be a bit cheaper.

Get American Black Walnut veneered MDF and matching Iron on real wood edging.

Bepending on the span 18mm (veneered is 19mm) may be a bit thin but you can get the boards in 26mm

If the ABW is a bit too much try oak veneer and stain with Vandyke crystals which are made from walnut shells, then clear warnish over the top.

Another option is to cut the shelves from a walnut worktop, did this with a beech one a couple of weeks ago

A walnut coloured one!

A good timber merchant should be able to order the board in for you or go to a panel specialist such as Silvermans get the boards with two good sides not the balancer. They should also have the edging strips. Or if you want them cut and lipped try here as they offer this service or just buy thick walnut veneered shelves which are just two sheets of board stuck together and lipped.

Looks like the auto moderation wiped out the name of the crystals, they are V A N D Y K E crystals, you mix them with warm water to get the shade you need, I buy mine from here
