Eventually got myself a dash cam. Mounted it behind the rear view mirror, job done. Or so I thought. I should have realised my windscreen never gets cleaned at the area immediately in front of the camera. My wipers are vertical either side and then wipe across and down. This leaves a triangle of unwiped screen.

:(

So now my options are leave it in-situ and accept the footage won't be great when it's raining, or move it. Thing is, if I move it I'll likely need to fanny around with buying another universal mounting kit (too long a story) and obviously I need to watch exactly where I install, so not obstructing the view etc.

Why can life never be straightforward?!?

When I located mine on the car screen(s - 2 car family, both have dash cams). The units I have the screen blanks after 2 minutes then has a flashing indicator to show it's alive. Being 'clever' I first placed them on the screen so I couldn't see the units, 'hidden' behind the interior mirror - bad move - I'm forever checking in daylight hours that the DAshCams are 'alive' and recording.
when I had to replace the one in the wife's car I placed it slightly differently so we can see the alive indicator.

You don't have to mount it dead centre to get a good view of the frog.
Many are very slightly off-centre to no ill-effect.

I just pop up to the pond to get a good view of mine - in Summer, mind.
This time o' year they're all frolicking in the depths and spawning like crazy.
It's more sordid than one of them Playboy party's at Hef's.

I don't understand why you can't simply move it.
Even fixed mountings can be removed and repositioned, you would only need a new 3M pad.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I'm not concerned about having to move it as such, it's just the fact it's neatly tucked away behind the rear view mirror so in that sense the ideal place for it i.e. discreet.

@johnny2007 are you joining the ranks of Notch for asserting stuff the poster never said? I don't think I said it couldn't be moved ;)
