I live in northern France and about five years ago I bought a De Dietrich boiler for hot water and central heating. I don't know the exact model - I can find out - it's one of the GT series. It's controlled by a Diematic 3 contol panel whose "built in regulator controls automatic operation of heating as a function of the outdoor temperature variations and the ambient temperature ..." There is thermostat in my living room which is linked by radio wave to a receiver in the outdoor shed where I keep the bolier. This thermostat shows both the indoor temperature and the one outdoors. The receiver in the shed, in turn is linked to both a thermometer on the outside wall, and to the boiler.

After five years I now know that the radio reception between the indoor thermometer and the radio receiver can be knocked out for a variety of reasons and I now know how to re-initialise it.

The problem I now have is that the outdoor temperature as shown on the thermostat in the living room, and on the outside temperature guage in the heater itself, has started to give crazy readings anywhere between -14.0 and -22.0 - yes, that's right - minus. Apparently arctic conditions like this trigger the furnace into a frenzy of thermal action, irrespective of what the thermostat in the living room is set to.

Re-initialising the system does nothing; the old sub-arctic temperatures re-appear on the living room thermostat. The false readings are in the system. To my simple mind it would appear that these bad measures are being produced by the the outside temperature guage which is faulty. But perhaps I have not understood the complexity of the problem.

About three weeks ago I contacted the arm of the after sales service of De Dietrich which specialises in the radio-control systems. They made some adjustments to the settings and left after 25 minutes leaving a large bill. Their fix lasted 24 hours. I have now asked my local CH maintenance firm, who also specialise in De Dietrich to come and have a look.

But I am not confident. My impression is that that these radio-controlled systems are too complicated for their own good (or for that of their owners); that De Dietrich in particular is especially difficult. Consequently not many people really understand them. The problem is exacerbated in that the discussion with technicians goes on in central heating French and mine is not very good.

Three questions:

1. What do you think of my diagnosis that the outside temperature guage has failed?

2. If it is not that, what else could it be?

3. Is it possible to re-configure the control system so that this radio-controlled system is replaced by a single wire linking my living room thermostat to the boiler?

Many thanks in advance.
