Just after a bit of info on what laptop to be buying for a xmas present, I have only limited knowledge of pc,s and their workings...what I am after is something up to £600 which is reliable , without bamboozling me with all the spec what make/model should I go for and where should I get it from .

Like daozen said, any ideas with what you want to be doing with it would help. Eg, if it was just browsing the net then perhaps a netbook would be enough which would set you back say less than half of your budget.
If you wanted to do a bit more like word processing than getting a larger keyboard would be a must as long text input on a netbook isn't much fun - as said, it all depends on what you want to do.
I'd recommend using the Dell outlet site, which is where I got mine from 3 years ago. I picked up a very high spec(for the time) machine for almost half price. The outlet site I believe is machines that have been sent back that are new/slight cosmetic damage. Mine came with a 3 year waranty which included next day on site repair. Heh heh, in fact, the graphics card died recently (just within my warranty) and an engineer came out and replaced it and also came out with a new LCD panel which he fitted as he had it any way - result!

I will second "toph's" recommendation for the Dell Outlet. Personally with Dell laptops I prefer the Latitude range to the Inspiron range. I find that the Latitude range have more options for connectivity, docking stations etc and a better build quality. However, that's just a personal opinion.
