The frame for my decked area I am making out of 4 x 2 - it's a narrow path type area and with a limited span in mind, it's handier not having to lose the extra height of 6 x 2, and perhaps just whacking some extra bracing in instead.

The Mrs picked up some joist hangers from the builders merchants today but they look too big - the "cupped" area doesn't finished until more than 4 inches up the hanger, and then there are pretty long bits that I presume should be wrapped over the top of the beam? Wrapping even immediately where the metal goes straight again would mean the joists sit lower than the timber they are attached to.

Question is this - should I adapt these with a hacksaw, or can you actually get hangers designed for 4 x 2 specifically? Online when I have looked they all seem to be massive.

Cheers.

You can buy all different sized Joist Hangers....id take them back to save all the hassle at get the correct sized ones

I was looking at some in BQ earlier this week as it happens....as im building mine next weekend :)

dont bother skew nail them in.

if you do use them, put the timber in frst and fix with a couple of nails then put the joist hangers on. the timber can vary in size and you will end with some higher and some lower than the frame. And yes you do wrap the matel tails over the wood
