Hi guys, someone knocked up this patio for us .. but didn't bother adding any fencing! I now need to retro fit the posts -and then the spindles later. Please take a look at the pic here. The decking is sat on a brick skirt, with wooden joists in the middle. Is there any way to fit the posts directly onto the decking? Or do I need to start them from the ground up? The issue there is the concrete lip at the bottom, but maybe I could shape the wood around that, so it still 'sits' on the floor, and then screw the post into the brick wall? What do you suggest?

You could fit posts to the wall, notched to clear, or possibly fit a rail system to the top of the deck
Top of the deck would be easier if the rail goes all around the deck, as it would support itself
Or uses the angles of the handrail along with the stairs to form Z's for rigidity

Hi, yes I need a rail system, but how do I start the posts on the decking?

Thanks, but my whole issue is with getting the posts fitted onto the decking. How do I do that?

Screw the base rail down to the decking and use diagonal screws to hold the posts in place
Once it is built it becomes firm

Any pics of examples of this? Sorry, I'm not quite with you.
