I want to lay a decking area on top of my existing concrete patio. What is the best way? I know normally you put posts in the ground and build a frame around them, but obviously i cant do that, so is it ok to just build a frame and lay it on top of concrete? Will it not move? How would i level it off? Any ideas would be appreciated

I don't know what height you can play with, maybe 1 course with a few piers of engineer bricks then dpc > floor joists > decking

Example,

Although you could use treated timber as a bearer underneath like this, engineer bricks would better though as it wouldn't soak up the dampness etc.

Could i not just rest the frame/joists on engineering bricks and fix the bricks to the concrete patio?

Build the outside square of the frame. Use a post in each corner resting on the patio. Raise the deck up to the level you want and secure it on each post as you gou around. You can now put the rest of the members in. Once thats done you can use posts at the required intervals to secure the frame. As you secure each one just pull the frame up slightly so its bearing down on the post, and in turn onto the patio. If there is a wall you are building it adjacent to then you can secure it into this. It wont move anywhere though as the weight will hold it in place.
