Delay before skimming over new boards

Dear Experts,

How long is it OK to wait between installing new plasterboards and skimming over them? The British Gypsum docs say "minimum of delay". I'll be doing several rooms over many months and it would probaly be cheaper to get a plasterer in only once at the end. What actually happens to boards - is the concern with moisture absorbtion?

Had 80% of my house plastered after boards had been up for around 6 months, ceilings and walls , no problems.
