My Dell Dimension 2400 is silent, theres no sound - no system sounds or any sound when I put in an audio CD.

I've checked the Sounds and Audio Devices control panel and everything seems to be set right (Audio record/playback both set to SoundMAX), and nothing is on Mute.

What's up Doc?

Two things to try.
Firstly, if it has only happened recently do a system restore to just prior to when it happened,

If not successful, check the Device Manager
If XP
Start -> Control Panel -> Performance & Maint. -> System -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager
Click the + sign next to Sound Controllers
Are there any yellow triangles with '!' inside? If anywhere it will probably be next to Legacy Audio Drivers.
Double click the Legacy Audio
Does it say Device working OK or is there a fault.
Click Troubleshoot and follow the instructions.

Thanks, I did a restore and that seemed to have cured it. Strange because it was only recently built and everything was working, supposedly!

Glad the System Restore sorted it.
Can you remember, after the date you restored back to, had you installed any updates or programs as it may have been an update that buggered it.

Its not been touched since the last build. But I have got Windows updater on auto (download and install at 3:00AM!) and I know theres been at least one update because I got a message one morning that the PC had been rebooted. Maybe worth thinking about switching off the install bit, just being a bit lazy!

Set it to Notify me but do not download or install.

You will get a popup saying there are updates available, so go and do the Custom search.

Then download and install just a couple at a time and after a reboot see how you computer runs.

Microsoft do an 'Update Tuesday' every second Tuesday of the month but it may be on the Wednesday by the time you get notification, so that is when you can expect the popup.

They do other critical updates as and when necessary but they are usually on one update.
