Sorry this is a simple one, a friend does not know how to cancel the keyboard numbers. Every time she logs in, she gets numbers instead of letters when the relevant key is pressed. I expect there is a combination of 'shift +*' or something similar to get out of this mode. I would be grateful if anyone reading has the answer. ( Naturally she doesn't have a manual!)

Thanks Plugwash, that was it. Unfortunately I was trying to fix this by phone, so didn't have the laptop in front of me.

on a laptop you generally don't want numlock on startup. get your friend to go into the bios (f2 or del on startup on c800s) and set so that numlock is not on by default.
