Hi all.
This may sound like a stupid question (so sorry in advance), we are planning on knocking down our 2 car garage (totally detached from anything, brick built with flat felt roof) and adding an annexe for my mum.
We have almost filled the garage with buildings rubbish from refurbing our bungalow. Do we have to empty the garage for it to be knocked down, or can we leave the rubbish in the garage and the builders knock it down around it? Then maybe it would work out cheaper for a grab truck as there must be about 8 big skips full of rubbish already.
Any advice gladly received.
Thanks!

The garage needs emptying for the demolition to be effective. The guys will need to move around inside the garage when isolating electrics and removing the roof etc.

Also, the masonry will not peel away, rather it will fall into the garage space mixing with all the garage stuff. Finally, if the wind gets up, your stuff could blow everywhere.

We once hire a supersize skip for lightweight materials and used a 3 tonne digger to ram it down and got a lot of stuff in that skip.

FWIW: There is a recent video in the (web) newspapers of some foolish guy (calling himself a builder) demolishing a small brick garage with a concrete roof.

He actually locates - or traps - himself in the small space between the house wall and the garage wall that he's attempting to demolish.

Lacking any knowledge of simple building principles he brought the whole thing crashing down on himself and nearly lost a leg.

God help me for calling the guy in the demolition video. Turns out he was an ex-squaddie doing his best to earn a living with, presumably, no proper training.

In another earlier post somewhere here on diynot.com i was indignant about how the services discharge people into civilian life with no real training or preparation for this harsh, "you are on your own now" world.

If the authorities are willing to provide every facility to get Tommy, or Tammy, Atkins to the sound of the guns, then they should do just as much to re-train, and thoroughly prepare, them for civvy street.

Check out what the much maligned American forces do for veterans compared to what the UK does. The US system is not perfect but it's a sight better than what seems to have been on offer to that poor man who is now crippled for life.

Polish forces look after their leavers as well, worked with a fella who left their army with two degrees in IT. They have a smaller elite armed forces though opposed to our large, creaky, thinly spread forces.
