"UK government pays £6bn to end privatisation of military housing

Ministry of Defence to save £230mn in rent every year by buying back 36,000 properties sold off in 1996

"The UK government will pay property group Annington nearly £6bn to buy back 36,000 properties in the Ministry of Defence’s housing estate, ending a legal battle over one of the country’s most controversial privatisation deals.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Defence said it was taking back the military estate it sold off for £1.7bn almost 30 years ago, in an agreement sealed in the final years of John Major’s Conservative government.

The sale ends a tortuous 30-year privatisation under a complex system of leases that has sparked multiple court actions and saddled the government with billions of pounds in rent and maintenance costs."

just imagine how much money this country wouldve saved had it never privatised everything for a quick buck

It was always a terrible deal. Good to see it is finally being addressed.

What are the odds that, should the tories get in next time, they'll flog 'em off again?

If they did so for say £5B, they'd probably claim that they turned a Labour £6B cost into a tory £5B saving for the taxpayer.........

Motorbiking will be along to tell you the private sector is more competitive.............
They certainly made married quarters the 'best' ****test they could conceivably be. Not sure that's a good thing though. Property sevices in my day took a load of flak, but the current sitch is shameful. For balance, we had 3 married quarters in the 80s - 2 excellent, one a bit shabby.

Selling off an estate designed for service personnel to fund tax cuts. Then cut the military further.
