I have to sand down some skirting and architraves.

I'm told that you can get 'detail sanders' which can deal with the curve bits found on architraves etc.

Is this true, are they any good? Can anyone recommend a decent model?

Cheers!

are you totally sanding the paint work down back to the bare timber?
if not how bad is the paint work, will a good scratch up with glass paper by hand not suffice?or do you want to invest in a detailed sander for other projects?.

I need to get the varnish/stain off so it can be undercoated and glossed.

I'm prepared to buy a detail sander if it will genuinely do the job as I'll eventually have to do the panel doors and some other skirting/architrave in the house.

If they're not effective I'll stick with the aluminium oxide sponges

if you have several hours to waste then use a detailed sander but not for complete removal that requires several days lol

you need to key the surface to paint or strip the paint and use the detailed sander to clean the small amount off residue left

using a detailed sander to strip paint is like cutting the grass on a football pitch with nail scissors

A rub down with sand paper by hand is all that's needed, varnish is suitable for over painting.
