Dial electricity meter

Hello

We have a dial style electricity meter in our house. Our provider claims that it was installed in 2002. I thought these were phased out long before that. Is it possible that it was installed in 2002?

I dont believe there is/was a phasing out. The DNO will install whatever they feel is necessary. The next move would be to smart meters, apparently. That will be a phasing out of existing, if the darn project ever gets off the ground…...

Quite common for meters to be taken off circuit at statutory mete changes, be returned to a workshop, cleaned, zeroed, checked for accuracy and then go out for re-use.
Recycling like this has been going on for many years.

Because the previous owners of the house said that just before they moved out they got a letter from their provider (different to ours) saying that the electricity meter would be replaced free of charge because of its age. Our provider says it doesn't need replacing.

So it probably doesn't need replacing. Do you have any reason for having concerns about it (e.g. you think it's inaccurate). If not, as JohnD asked, "why do you care"?

Then it doesn't need replacing. The meter is not owned by you.
It is the responsibility of the provider.

If you think the meter is inaccurate, or dangerous then you should call them to investigate. Its entirely up them what they provide to record your electricity usage.

No, the visible ones look more like the too old to re-use types.

BTW it's easy enough to check the age of a meter, the first two digits give the year of manufacture

So the one in Taylortwocities photo is a Landis and Gyr made in 1969

... and the "01 89" the date when it was last tested/calibrated?? If so, does that man that this one has been 're-cycled'?

Thanks for all your replies.

It looks like our meter was made in 1968 and was last tested in 1988. As it is up to the provider when they replace the meter, I guess we will just have to wait for a smart meter (they said we would get one before 2020!).
