If anyone remembers my pigeon thread at Xmas when my lad found a pigeon and we tried to take him in and look after him well we had another creature in need today.
The word must have got around as a frog turned up on my drive today. I left it alone hoping it would go back to his friends but when I got back later it was still there.

It was motionless and non responsive so I thought it would be safer by the canal so I put him in a box and drove to the local canal. I lifted the newspaper holding the frog and gently placed it into the water where it remained motionless. I removed the paper thinking it would swim away but it sank to the bottom. :(

I waited a few mins hoping to see him swimming around happily but there was no sign. They do swim don't they or have I inadvertently done it a disservice? :(

Yes they swim very happily around my pond (they also float around mating with each other too!) Theres 8, last count!

Is there any static water near you (lakes, big ponds)? There is near us, they migrate to our pond every year about this time to mate, then f*** off and leave their young!

I dont think you did it a disservice, it was probably already dead (they dont like getting too dry) but frogs dont live in canals, they prefer static water or planted river edges.

They do swim, apart from the exceedingly rare and protected monofrog, which has the distinctive habit of lying still for long periods while waiting for its mate. The monofrog must not get wet apart fom the occasional rainshower.

If you ever find a frog and dont know where it has come from, leave it. They will try to make it back to where they came from originally and it the process will prob die. You might find the odd one will go on a holiday to someone elses pond but very rarely will they stay there

I had a similar experience a couple of nights ago walking in the rain, I saw to frogs maybe one was a toad outside two different driveways, I felt like I should take them home, instead I sort of used my feet and moved them, they jumped under the cars......after that I stopped as I didnt want people to think I was breaking into cars as they do...

I am wrooied they would be run over now, but dosnt bother me,

If its meant to be it will be..... :D

It's laying a guilt trip on you, don't worry they live in water ;)

They love the-- pretending to drown thing :D

if it sank it was a dead 'un. about 40 or so of my toads died over the winter, probably frozen under and couldn't get air. now there's a load more in the pond. they're croaking away right now.
