Can anyone help. I had a leaking water pump and removed the timing belt to replace same. I have bought a new belt but cannot fit it as there are no timing marks on the camshaft sprocket (it is not the same as a petrol engine, as I soon found out). I can time the bottom end and fuel pump but I cannot get the camshaft to TDC. Would I be right if I got the cam lobes on cylinder one rocking then this would indicate that was TDC? I have since read that you need a special tool to do this job but surely someone out there has the answer.

Sorry mate, but you can't do it without the tool because there are no marks. The good part being they are not all that dear to buy. Here is an example link but you will have to check your engine type.

You don't say what type of engine you have but on the later Izuzu (1.7DTI)engines there is a known problem with the oil pump drive which is also driven by the cam belt. They have a habit of coming loose because there is neither loc-tite nor a tab washer on them and they can also shatter. It is in your best interest to replace the drive and bolt and also use loc-tite on assembly. I can't stress this enough because if the drive fails it can cost the engine, the parts are not that expensive and you are over half way to doing the job anyway at this stage.
I am telling you this from experience, because this fault happened to me last year!
Have a read here for some more.
