Hello,

One of my relatives has just completed purchase on a new flat. It has a combined living room and kitchen. The kitchen has already lino installed by default but the living room is bare concrete at the moment.

The plan is to lay down laminate flooring in the living room. However, we calculated that the combined height of laminate floor board + underlay in living room is going to mean that the floor will be higher than the kitchen lino by about 15mm plus.

We're looking to buy a piece of wood or plastic that slopes downwards so that it covers the inevitable step that's going to get created.

Do such things exist? (...and what is a more precise name for them :) ) Or do they only sell horizontal ones that that separate rooms at door frames?

Go to any decent (independant) carpet supplier. You can get wood, plastic and metal covers in various profiles. Tel them exactly what you need it for and they will be able to supply it. Note, unless they have an off cut laying about, you might have to buy a 2mtr length of it.
The one you're after has about an 8mm gap on one side and a solid type "ramp" on the other and will be about 40 - 50mm wide. Sometimes they are in two parts, a lower and an upper, but the shop will explain it,. it's really easy!

Woody

UKwoody is correct, they are also sometimes called 'reducers'.
Some suppliers do have them standard in 1meter lenghts though (we do)
