I was thinking of buying the Nikon D70 digital slr, and while looking i noticed that Cannon have now bought out a new Digital slr camera with 8 megapixals.

Well if the equivelent of 35mm film is around 4 - 5 megapixals, then why would you want 8 megapixals what would you acheive through having a camera which has a spec this high?????????

Close-ups are sooo much better with a better camera (more pixels)
Less difference with scenery/landscape type pictures
(I paint 28mm scale models,and 2mp camera doesn't compare with 5mp for macro shots)

I may be wrong Freddie, but I think that you need about 12 Mega pixel to truly compete with high quality 35mm Film.

If you are simply taking Holiday snaps, then I would suggest that a 4-5 Megapixel Camera is sufficient for your needs. I use a Canon EOS350 DSLR (6 Megapixel) and that is more than sufficent for what I use it for.

Personally if you want a decent Digital Camera, the EOS350 will last for many years.

I would have bought that camera Engineer, but for the fact it has a plastic body and i hate that on cameras, which is why i am going for the Nkon equivelent, well i was i dont know what to do now. You see my camera which i am selling is the cannon eos300 35mm with all the kit wide angle and 75-300 zoom.

The only reason i am selling is because of a little idea i have at the moment as i already have a cannon ixus v2 digital camera

I can't say i looked at the EOS300's, but my EOS350 definetly has an aluminium or magnesium body. It is a lightweight metal for sure although it has a plastic coat over the top.

Are you sure, does it say that on the speck--------i always thought it was plastic, could you have a look at the spec please engineer because i would definitly be very interested if it was a metal case

Perhaps to begin approaching the 'larger / medium format' film quality... But then again, all that glisters ! in respect of 'more pixels' .....
If you go DSLR and Canon, would it be prudent to retain your canon lenses, if they are compatible of course ?

According to the paperwork, the body is a magnesium alloy coated with plastic to prevent corrosion.

If you want a proper digital camera, you need to go to the people who first developed them...Astronomers..

The KAI-22000M/CM digital camera has 22 Million Pixels for images that are 4008 x 2672 in size at standard setting or 8016 x 5340 interlaced. The camera has three heads, an integral 2" Filter wheel for 6 filters, standard C mount for 2" eyepiece attachment. It has integral water cooling for the detector and this can be changed to Dry Ice or even liquid CO2 / NO2. An upgraded versionis available (KAI-22000M/LN) that will allow the use of Liquid nitrogen to cool the detector to 50K (-223C)

The detector can operate in 1/10,000th lumen and will record images in the near Infra-red when cooled below -30C or even near UV with the correct filter when cooled below -90C.

This is an example of the type of picture it can capture with a decent amateur scope (Meade LX200 GPS-SMT 14" telescope) when cooled using dry ice (CO2)

construction-001.gif

..Construction According to Canon the EOS 350D is made up of three main materials; a stainless steel chassis (blue in the diagram), the mirror box which is made of high-strength 'engineering plastic' (red in the diagram) and the body made of a special lightweight 'engineering plastic' which also provides some electromagnetic shielding...

Strange???????whats Engineer on about then?????????

I have only just re-read the thread - I don't know, perhaps the site where I found the info has it wrong ?
I would say that it is made of the right materials for the particular job in hand Canon have been at it for some time I suppose.
Just popped to their site :- Canon EOS 350D Spec.
...Body Materials
Stainless Steel / Plastic

Amazing how the technology is moving forward, I bought my Olympus Camedia C-5050z 2 yrs ago, 5Mp was pretty hot then... mind you that does have a plastic coated Magnesium body but ain't SLR. .. She'll burn well in a fire tho' ;)
I have an Olympus OM1 F1.4 35mm bought in Suanapore 1980 .. superb old camera still going strong ...
I think I'll be looking at a medium format SLR with replaceable back later

Like this ... larger initial outlay but replaceable backs etc doesn't require the whole thing to be purchased ... never mind the width see the larger format quality .. you'd be hard pushed to return to 35mm !!
... Digi cameras are like PC's now, dated very quickly.

I have just double checked my paperwork and it certainly does say the shell of the camera is a magnesium alloy with a plastic coating..Yes there is a stainless steel chassis inside too.

Perhaps there are two models manufactured? I bought mine in the US as it was significantly cheaper than in the UK, maybe the Yank spec is different then, but I still have an international warranty with it.
