I was given a very nice looking digital radio as a present. It works great and sounds great. However, when you hold it to your ear you can hear a light humming/buzzing sound coming out of the speakers. Very faint but its continual. And it does disturb me and it has woken me at 4am as I sleep close by. Is this small noise normal?
It is connected via an extension cable, is that an issue?

There should be no backround noise on a digital radio. If the hum/buzz does not increase with volume then it is probabley mains hum it will be a mains component in the power supply within the radio choke/transformeer etc. or possibly poor earthing connection in the radio but not the extension as you thought may be a possibility.
