i have a standard indoor fan rated at 70W. it has 3 speed settings but on the slowest setting it's still very fast and noisy.

can i use a lighting dimmer with the fan to slow it down?
i've noticed with a lot of dimmers they say not suitable for brushless motors, so are fans typically brushless?

If you have access to a wholesaler, there are speed controllers specially made for fans. They are like a dimmer, but have a fan symbol on the front.

Dimmers output a chopped waveform and you are likely to damage or rupture the windings in your fan if you do, unless you purchase a dimmer specially designed for inductive loads.
as suggested buy a proper fan controller
