hi, i am replacing existing hall light switch with a dimmer switch and i have ran into problems. the existing hall light is controlled by 3 light switches, one at either end and one in the middle. The switches at either end are double switches controlling outside light / hall light and hall light / cupboard light. the middle light is single and just controls the hall light. So the middle light switch is the target of my attention, a straight swap for a dimmer.
the wiring of this switch has 2 black and 2 red and an earth which is joined together in the space behind the switch, it isn’t joined in the body of the switch, the red / blacks are from 2 cables, one cable containing red and black to l1 and one cable containing red / black to l2. the replacement dimmer, a push on/off and dimmer switch, has l1 l2 and c.
i have tried the following combinations bridging black, red to l1 and l2 and result is lights are permanently on
i tried red / black from each separate cable, red from cable one to red of cable 2 and black of cable 2 to black of cable 1, to l1 l2 and no functioning of lights
any help to get this functioning please
