Dimmer Switch

Assistance needed!

I am trying to change an existing dimmer (metal single knob) with a new metal dimmer (single knob).

The existing had one red wire connected to L2 and the other wires connected to the internal box / plate. There was another red wire free.

I am not sure whether i have disconnected the free red wire when i removed the dimmer. The free red wire does not look as though it was ever connected to anything as there was no marks on it from where the screw would clamp on it (as one would expect).

I have tried reconnecting the new dimmer to L2 and the Old Dimmer but to no avail. I have even tried L1

Any ideas before i call a professional.
