I\\\'m just replacing rads for new ones whose instructions indicate that they must be connected a particular way round. I have no sure way of knowing which was the flow/return on the old rads, having since cut the pipes to plumb in the new rads. Is it essential to get them the \\\"right\\\" way round? How significant a differance is it likely to make if I dont?

I can see why the valves may need to be the right way round but what difference will it make with the rads??
The flow gets warm first, the way to tell is turn the system on before you start work and mark up your flow and return, unfortunately you cant......can you remember which end the wheelhead valve was on, ie the one you could turn on and off?, that should be your flow.
